Finntroll

Since 1997, Finntroll has stood as one of the most distinctive and influential forces in folk metal, pioneering the unique blend of aggressive black metal with traditional Finnish folk melodies that would inspire countless bands worldwide. Founded in Helsinki by Teemu "Somnium" Raimoranta and Jan "Katla" Jämsen, Finntroll emerged from the late 1990s metal underground with a sound unlike anything that had come before - a ferocious synthesis they playfully dubbed "black humppa" (humppa being a traditional Finnish folk dance). Their mythological concept, sung primarily in Swedish rather than Finnish, tells tales of trolls, forest spirits, and ancient Nordic folklore, creating a fantastical universe that perfectly complements their equally fantastical music.

Finntroll's journey through the folk metal landscape has been marked by both triumph and tragedy, evolution and consistency. Early albums like Midnattens Widunder (1999) and Jaktens Tid (2001) established them as innovators who could seamlessly weave accordion melodies and folk rhythms into crushing metal frameworks. Despite facing devastating setbacks - including the tragic death of founding guitarist Teemu Raimoranta in 2003 and vocalist Jan Jämsen's vocal cord issues forcing his departure - Finntroll persevered with albums like Nattfödd (2004) and Ur Jordens Djup (2007), continuously refining their approach. Their eighth studio album Vredesvävd (2020) marked a triumphant return after a seven-year hiatus, translating to "Wrath Woven" and perfectly encapsulating the dark yet vibrant tapestry of sound that Finntroll creates. With vocalist Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns and keyboardist-composer Henri "Trollhorn" Sorvali leading the charge, the album showcases their mastery in blending punchy rhythms with traditional influences, creating a soundscape that's both mythical and immersive without ever losing its raw energy.
